Numerical Modelling of the Self‐Erecting Tower for Onshore Wind Turbines

Abstract Massive wind energy converters are becoming more popular in the market. However, such technologies troublesome to implement onshore due logistic issues and costly erection techniques. Hence, industry research have focused on producing lighter modular towers overcome these limitations. The Self‐Erecting Tower (SeT) is made from staves that assembled by an internal crane. This crane supported a helicoidal rail attached inner face of staves, allowing it move along tower's height help with erection, maintenance, future disassembling structure. Finite element analyses tower its parts been performed primary objective assessing structural feasibility this innovative concept. A parametric analysis based first natural frequency was define SeT gross geometry. Later, specific combination variables analysed evaluate maximum stresses. significant level confidence achieved through numerical modelling, confirming can support design actions imposed 5 MW turbine for 160 m hub height. Lastly, economic evaluation final conducted compared other traditional solutions.
